Song 12. Mycelium Me (demo)

The mushroom is all you see

Celtic emo-rock in the B standard guitar, drop D bass of the moon. This is a fun one to play. I've had the verse guitar riffs and idea for the lyrics for over a year. But the rest of it, including the cool pre-chorus and chorus riffs, and the big chords I use to break it all up, are all new, mostly worked out last week while I took some time off work.

The drums and production were a nightmare as usual. The bass is supposed to stay out the way in this one. Maybe. I haven't decided. Let me know what you think, oh world.

Just the music:

The vocals could improve. What's new there? And yes some of my drum fills are crap and random. The moon likes to keep you on your toes. It must be the lack of gravity.

I dunno. It's celtic-sounding dad folk/emo/whatever rock. Perhaps you are firmly on your heels haha.

The lyrics, which I wrote over the past few weeks, are about my complicated relationship with the abusive people in my life, and about trying to be myself throughout and trying not to care what they think, want, or want of me, as much as I do. I imagine myself as a mass of fungal hyphae underground. I'm always myself, but they may see me only when I choose to grow a mushroom and push it above ground. And its just one aspect of my own complicated nature that I often reveal. The song is also about taking a more positive attitude. Rising above the grass that is as green as I need it to be.

The Earth is credited with helping the songwriting, discussing the song’s message with me at length on a glorious 2-night trip away in the dark woods of Northern California. Also, for suggesting the lyric “but under the veil, what do they see?”

That acoustic one I’ve left until last …. and I still can’t decide whether it should be that or Cave Frolic, which is another ‘celtic rock’ song, kinda…
