The first song on a new guitar has to be recorded …. this one came to mind first (Original song here)
Recently has been tough. I’ll spare you the details, but last week I needed cheering up, big time.
I turned to an old friend. Online music commerce. I Am the Moon has a store on reverb.com!
I put my black ESP Sparrowhawk guitar that I never play any more, and its case, up for sale (along with a few pedals I never use, one of which I sold and shipped today hurrah!)
And I haggled on my nice new Schecter Omen Elite-7. I’ve been planning this move for a while …
First, I have been playing my 7-string Douglas for almost exclusively for a while. For me, there are zero downsides to playing a 7-string. It’s a 6-string, with an extra string. If you don’t need it, don’t play it. But if you want it, its there! And besides, that low B stands for Better then E.
Second, I need a second 7-string for a few reasons. A, when I’m a gigging rockstar I’ll need a few, obviously. B, I want a hardtail so I can put it easily in different tunings (this is about 99% of the real need). C, I want to take my lovely Douglas to the Moon shop to get its volume and tones knobs replaced (poor mite), so it may be out of action for a week. D, it’s blue - Douglas is green. E, Douglas suffers from some badly intonated high frets on the first two strings, so some songs I can’t play on him.
Third, I wanted a Schecter because I love my Schecter bass, and because they are a California company making good affordable guitars. I’m not a gear head, or rich, so I like a good bargain. I got one here - 130 dollars off retail price for a new instrument, through Reverb.com persistence and tenacity and haggling :)
I also wanted a a) a C-shape neck, b) 24 frets, c) a long scale length (it got 26.5 inches), d) mahogony, which is comparatively sustainable.
Why the Omen Elite-7? Well, the Omen was in my price range for a new 7-string. I toyed with the idea of a multiscale fretboard for a while, but in the end decided I just needed a good hardtail, no fuss - simple 5-way switch on 2 humbuckers, no floating bridge, no fancy schmants.
Why not the Omen Extreme-7? The Schecter Diamond Heretic pickups are just better than the Schecter Diamond Plus inside the Extreme. I have (had) push/pull wiring on my Sparrowhawk and, honestly, that’s one of the reasons why I’m selling it - I feel like it is a bug, not a feature. I never want single coil sound, and if I did, I would use my Douglas which has a dedicated single coil.
I love my new Schecter Omen Elite-7.
As I write, my Sparrowhawk resides in someone’s cart …. and I have a low-ball offer I will counter …. so reverb.com “predicts it to sell soon” …. hopefully……
….. because I sad-bought another guitar at the weekend!!!!!!!! More on that soon …. this is for the album, I promise :)
